(byms)

This photo was taken from Serangan Island, Bali. The aircraft sports a new livery, part of the airline’s “Quantum Leap” strategy. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Upon flying with Garuda Indonesia, I found myself disappointed upon the pilot announced that in half an hour we’ll reach our destination, especially since the onboard movie I watched is highly interesting and it’s still half-way through the story. I’ve managed to be fully awake as well during the whole time, enjoying the food, treats, and busy trying out their onboard entertainment facility, while thinking out how to improve the User Experience of its GUI.

Upon flying with low cost carriers however, like Lion Air or even the flashy ones like Air Asia, I often awaken in the middle of my sleep during the flight and thinking that the engine sound is too loud, I can’t straighten my legs properly, and silently complained why we haven’t reached our destination yet. That is the usual case as the only practical entertainment to have onboard is looking out of the windows, or catching a glimpse of the cute stewardess as they walk around the cabin. Well, you get what you paid for.

I also been thinking that the real Customer Experience improvements that could happen on flights anyway, is to shift the paradigm of flying itself. How? By introducing, instead of denying, the real flying experience.

The current experience I believe, is geared to shelter and minimizing the passenger’s real-flying experience, up to the point where passengers are made to believe that they’re still on ground somewhere, as most of what they can see are rows of passenger seats, and very small windows. Sans the bad weather bumps and take-off accelerations, viscerally you can be tricked into thinking you’re somewhere stationery, and on the ground, while in fact you’re cruising thousands of feet above the earth at about 900 Km/h, almost three times faster than the fastest Formula 1 racing car runs.

What would be neat instead, is to expose the passengers into the true experience of flying, by introducing see-through walls; an effect impossible to obtain using traditional glass windows, but will be obtainable soon using the combination of durable and flexible LCD screens with fast video cameras. The idea is for the camera to capture the views of the environment outside of the airplane then project it in real-time (or nanoseconds delay) into the flexible LCD panels installed on/as the plane’s interior walls. Imagine experiencing the near-space sky full with stars, or travelling among the clouds, and… nothing below you to catch your fall.

While the last feature might pose a greater challenge to those already having phobia of flying, or being in a high place, it might reduces the fear of those having phobia of closed space… or convert his phobia into the first two. As for myself I’m more than eager to have such experience, how about you? (byms)

Social bookmarking sites has been around for a while. Though not as famous as more glamorous social networking sites, i.e.: Facebook, people are still using them from time to time, and it has quite becoming a niche. From the rather classical del.icio.us (now delicious.com), to the avant garde Pinterest, you can see that people loves to share, especially on what they think are cool.

Delicious (was del.icio.us)

Delicious used to be my top choice for social bookmarking, as it’s accessible online from any place on earth, and it saves bookmarks from common users hence it reflects the true popularity of a webpage. And the way they formed their URL is unique.

At Delicious.com you can find references to almost anything you’re interested at, both legal and illegal, the barrier is your conscience. What differs it from a mere Google search result page lies in its curative nature; people only bookmarks web pages they think are cool. While the result might not be as wide-breath as Google, the quality however is much higher. You don’t cheat on Delicious while you can still cheat on Google search.

With the invention of Google Chrome bookmarking however, I can now synchronize bookmarks from any of my computers as long as it is connected to the internet, replacing the much needed shared bookmarking feature once is the strong point of Delicious. And I became quickly forgetting about the once highly required Delicious social bookmarking. I still get to visit them from time to time, but as I’m becoming more a Google person than a Yahoo! hipster, logging on to Delicious requires more efforts compared with using Google’s. Just like now I’m using Picasa more than Flickr.

With my increased involvement in Twitter however, there are new requirement tied in to its 140 character limitation messages, and the smart people out there then came up with the service of URL shortener! Something that would not make sense a decade ago. Some URL shortener service are built-in (like Twitter’s t.co), but more are independent and open for public use, one of them is bit.ly.

Bit.ly

Bit.ly excels in its capability to track clicks, so you can measure how your shortened links are doing; again, a need that wouldn’t make too much sense in early internet ages, but with the coming age of internet marketing & SEO, has becoming an indispensable tool. Click tracking gives good insight on what sort of links are your readers like to read, or curious about; and in turns enable you to fine tune your online marketing strategy.

Other worthy improvements from Bit.ly includes an alternative shortening URL: “j.mp”; a four digit URL that easily associated with “jump”, as well as its analogy of quickly travelling from a place to another, a term very well-suited for the internet world! T.co on the other hand while uses four digits as well, looses a real-life connection with a real & meaningful word, but T.co is a closed service anyway used as internal service on Twitter. Other URL shortening services even have a more meaningless URL, or fails to attain a good four digits URL.

It might have a serious contender from Google’s goo.gl and youtu.be, but as personal remarks, I think j.mp is much easier to remember, and they’re among the surviving 49% of what used to be a market with 1,002 competitors.

Last but not least, bit.ly also incorporates a good adds-on and extensions for major internet browsers, which making URL shortening a breeze.

Bit.ly + Bitmarks

Bit.ly newest update in Q2 2012 however, makes it much easier for their users to recall and review their past links, and with the ability of inserting note, it has now becoming an online social bookmarking sites as well!

Individual links are now called “bitmarks”, and they are more easier to share than before, find easier, comprehend easier, and can be grouped under “bundles”. It has a refreshed statistics as well, which making tracking more comprehensive.

A new Delicious?

With the referred to having a bit lacked in development; they don’t even include social networking login at the moment, Bit.ly wins on connectivity, and now includes similar social bookmarking feature as well. (byms)

Tabulet Beat 2 is the new Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) tablet released in early Q2 2012 in Indonesia. It’s a product of local Indonesian brand, Tabulet that promised to deliver good user experience with the combination of engine similar with the one used on iPad 2, HD screen resolution of 1024×600 px on an 7 inch screen, and Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system.

Among its interesting feature is the ability to read files from external hard disk, and its ability to play a wide range of movie formats, making it a perfect partner for gaming, as well as for HD movie viewing. As a standard feature, it is also equipped with micro DVI port which means you can view the screen on DVI enabled TVs (LCD, LED, Plasma).

With all the promising good user experience, how does it do in real test?

p.s.: I won’t dwell into the more technical parts and system performance of the device as what they can do on the user experience part matters more. However if you’d like to compare technical specifications, please find one at my previous article, copied from Tabulet’s own website.

User Experience: Unpacking

The package came in a neat looking cartoon box and tape-sealed bottom edge. There’s no cut-off part on the top part of the box, making gripping the box for opening it is a bit tricky, though not posing a serious challenge.

Inside the box there’s a white frame made of thick foam, with the table stored in the middle, under a protective thick plastic wrap. Removing it, then you’ll find the device wrapped inside another frosty plastic bag. The device looks elegant with its iPad-ish white color.

Removing the device is easy as there is a cavity on the frame enough for user to put a finger in and lift the tablet up.

User Experience: Physical appearance & Feel

The tablet feels solid and is quite light; the body is rigid, while the screen looks brownish. The feel however, is quite rough and very plasticy, with the impression is that it will be easily scratched.

It’s a great relieve then, to find out that this device is also shipped (mine at least) with a complimentary elegant brown leathery casing; it even smells leather. It has a magnetic-base lid closer, a good build, padding, density, stitching, and it perfectly fits the Tabulet Beat 2.

The look is minimalist with the logo appear only at the back of the device — again so iPad-ish but is a welcomed change, considering its previous model has “tabulet” logo printed quite blatantly on the front side of the device.

User Experience: Interacting with the device

Startup is a breeze, the logo of A9 processor first showed up, followed by both logo of Tabulet and Android’s green robot. Up until the device is ready to use, it takes about 30 seconds.

The one difference with Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) compared with older Android versions is that it incorporates three buttons on screen: back, home, and application switch, making interacting with the device quite button-less. There’s also a menu and back button accessible on top of Tabulet Beat 2, as well as the volume up & down which doesn’t really give a good experience: it’s hard and quite shallow hence clicking requires some effort.

I also discovered that while the leathery casing helps protect the device really well, it’s bulkiness has made touching the screen near its sides is very challenging. But if that’s the price I have to pay to compensate for the increased physical protection, that’s quite cheap, considering the number one enemy of tablets is falling face-down: there’s no cure to broken and cracked screen.

User Experience: Using the product

The device gives good feedback and touch is very responsive. There’s no lag in action, and movement is quite smooth.

Sound quality using built-in speakers lack the fidelity quite terribly; using its provided earphone helps improve the sound quality but on general it’s nothing to be desired of.

Picture is clear and colours are vivid. It ables to view photos in good outcome, and it plays HD movie smoothly right from the external hard disk using its provided USB cable. The connecting part could be a bit messy though, as most external hard disk will require extra power to operates normally since the tablet’s USB only provides small current of electricity. Tabulet Beat 2 overcomes this issue with using a twin-headed USB port; one for connecting the hard disk to the tablet, and the other is to provide extra power using Tabulet Beat 2′s own power adapter.

Plugging in the micro USB cable though, is very unconvincing as it’s very tight, hard, giving you the doubt that you might just break it if pushing/pulling it too hard.

Battery & Power

As with the battery, if you are playing an HD game the juice will be depleted in about one to two hours, while charging could take up to five hours for full charge. Better have your tablet plugged in if you are using it to play or runs good games or complex application.

It still uses a pin-like power socket, which from my experience with other tablet models poses less durability than USB type power plug. However the voltage has been synchronized to mimic USB’s common voltage of 5 volt DC means it’s usable to power the external hard disk as well, or on worst case easier to find a charger replacement. I can even recharge its power using a generic brand car adaptor with matching socket.

External Connection

Connecting is also easy: using its provided USB to micro USB cable adaptor, plugging it gives you the option to use the device as an external disk, enabling it to be read and write just like a USB drive on Windows based computers.

As with connection to external monitor via HDMI port, I’m still having trouble since it fails after several attempts and currently consulting with Tabulet’s customer service.

Update 06/06/12

HDMI out is working fine upon connected with my 22 inch LG monitor at the office, while it fails to connect with my 24 inch Samsung LCD TV back at home. However the tested working mode is only the 1080p while the 720p fails.

FYI my Samsung LCD TV at home is already HD ready, and previously it connected fine with my older tablet running Android 2.2 Froyo using the same HDMI cable.

While (in)compatibility issue was expected, the more shocking truth that quite letting down is that Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) upon connecting through HDMI exhibit a really different experience compared with Android 2.2. Froyo: while Froyo duplicate the screen, ICS blank the tablet and change it function as a touchpad! While it closely mimicking a desktop computer with mouse pointer, clicking is very hard (touching two points on the tablet simultaneously), and there’s only a single pointer available hence making a HD gaming on big TV screen impossible, and many apps relying on multi-touch will also fails. In my opinion it’s a sad downgrade from a full user experience into usable only for movie or still picture shows.

I haven’t yet however, figured out if this is an Android 4′s fault or the Tabulet Beat2 ROM’s.

Camera

Surprisingly the tablet’s 2 MP camera also works well; there’s a good UI to operate and adjust the camera, including its zoom level (digital zoom), and the quality itself is quite satisfying for casual uses.

Applications Compatibility

As with compatibility Tabulet 2 can play some applications designed for earlier type of Android, however sometimes it fails at running some applications that runs well on other devices with similar technical specification.

User Experience: Conclusion

Tabulet Beat 2 is a quite nice tablet with good user experience, though it lacked some features and interaction is not all smooth; they’re lies on a less major concerns. Has it mached iPad 2 look and feel? Hardly. Does it worth it weight in price? Absolutely! This wonderful device is sold in Indonesia with the price around 1,5 million rupiah, or about 160 USD; that’s a quarter price of iPad 2. It has a price of a generic Chinese brand’s tablet but with the much needed after-sales support that none of the Chinese brands have.

Here’s the round-up of pros and cons, along with some points I didn’t elaborate in details:

Cons:

Plasticy-feel body

Hard to press control buttons (power, navigation, volume)

Pin-like charger type

Screen prone to smearing, including from finger prints

Audio quality is so-so

No Bluetooth

Micro USB port is very tight

HDMI connection runs well on some monitors, fails on others

Upon HDMI connection, tablet turns into touchpad single pointer

Some application designed to support other devices with similar spec fails to run

Pros:

Smooth running user interface

Very responsive touchscreen

Quick execution of commands (navigating, opening application, opening file)

Connects to your external hard disk!

Plays HD from external hard disk smoothly

Its built-in player is capable to play MKV videos!

Dual Camera (2MP back, VGA front)

The camera result is quite nice (surprisingly)

The camera has 180`panorama taking mode

Good visualization on screen

Hi-res screen (1024 x 600 px)

Has DVI out

Already includes elegant & thick leathery casing

Android 4 – Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) out of the box, reducing the headache of compatibility issues

Already includes connecting cable for external hard disk: USB to Micro USB cable which includes power inlet for external power source to power the external hard disk

Thin and light

Costs only about 160 USD

Service centres available nation-wide (though my best guess is that they will be repaired in one centralized location)

Our office’s iPad 3 had just arrived last week, we bought it from Australia since no local vendors in Bali sells it yet. What surprises me on the first look is that it looks very much identical to the previous iPad 2, except for the part with air ventilation at the bottom of the back cover. It’s supposed to be a little thinner as well but you won’t be able to tell it from looking at it alone.

iPad 3

The other surprise that I have is that the UX is basically the same: the interactivity, the navigation, it’s just that now you’re viewing those on a much sharper display; 2048×1536 screen resolution, a feat hardly matched by any other tablet brand on the market at the moment. As with responsiveness, as iPad 2 is already very responsive, this one I see no difference either hence at a glance I don’t see any strikingly differences between iPad 3 and iPad 2, only in what lies underneath.

Tabulet Beat 2

On the other hand I got very curious upon finding out that Indonesian local brand Tabulet had just recently launched their new lines of tablets, based on Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and they have it right out of the box not upgrade like on other older brands. They have two new models each differs in its function; tablet + phone (Troy 2), tablet + Hi-Def screen + WiFi only (Beat 2).

Tabulet Beat 2

Quite different with iOs that keeps only minimum version of Operating System (OS), Android offers many flavours, and ICS is their newest one: it’s an OS created with tablet in mind, with a significant UX difference of providing three navigational button on-screen: back, home, and application switch.

With a price about 1/4 of iPad 3, an 1024 x 600 screen resolution, and the promise to play HD movies smoothly with the ability to read data from external hard disk, Tabulet Beat 2 is surely promising a lot. Seeing my tablet needs at the moment is mostly for education & entertainment (edutainment) purpose, Tabulet Beat 2 is a perfect replacement of the broken and unrepairable older MID Android tablet my kid usually uses.

Ordered one online from Bhinneka.com, the package arrived after 2×24 hours from Jakarta to Denpasar.

“Somehow it works” type of solution

My 2 years old BenQ FP92W monitor was acting funny for a couple of days. It all started when I managed to get a free DVI cable from our IT guy to take the full advantage of my Graphic Card. As with the image looks much better and I was able to see details not visible before using the D-Sub connection (regular VGA cable), the downside is that the monitor now refuses to start-up. It will displays the BenQ screen, but after a while the screen flickers and it went off.

Sometimes it will start up normally, under unknown reason but always at the Windows login screen right after you press Ctrl + Alt + Del and it pop out a password entry box. However then it refuses to work whatever I done, and it’s getting me quite nuts. It was working once when I connected both the D-Sub and the DVI cable together as suggested by a guy on the internet, but after I tried to tweak the BIOS setting it now refuses to work altogether.

Submitting the issue to our IT guy, however as much as he’d like to help, the only solution is to change my monitor temporarily until he can find out what’s wrong with this BenQ FP92W. And too bad we don’t have a spare with similar spec.

Having been in an IT helpdesk position before (slash designer, slash developer, slash sales), I got tempted to consult Google again. This time I go straight into finding out how to set the BenQ FP92W into its recovery mode. I believe with sophistication comes the resetting ability. And so I downloaded the BenQ FP92W user manual, and there I found information on how to solve the OSD lock. It was a whole different topic but the solution is to press the “Menu” button for 15 seconds. Seeing no harm in doing this, I tried it first before looking further for the specific problem I have.

Have the PC ready and presumably already on Windows login screen, I push the power button again, then quickly pressed the Menu button while the screen is flickering…

It’s funny how after about two seconds the screen stays on then shows: “Input: DVI” and the monitor is now turned on.

The solution somehow worked for this issue as well.

Case closed? I’m not sure. It’s all part of the mysterious “Somehow it works” kind of solution, but for now at least I can use my other PC again.

BenQ FP92W UX Issue

As with the BenQ FP92W, its sleek minimalist look helps on the aesthetic factor, but relocating all of the control buttons to the side is a bad UX decision for following reasons:

The buttons, while accompanied by clear and standardized symbol or texts explaining its use, is completely invisible from the front view

The buttons are not arranged in easy to discern meaning

Though there are good separation and grouping of buttons, however with their identical shapes it doesn’t give a clue on what it’s suppose to do, making users have to rely on their vague memory

If user choose to turn the monitor sideways, he has to switch his mind between reading the button label, and reading the on-screen display output

One of the solution to this issue is, to have the buttons in different shape, e.g.:

Round button for the power function (mimicking the power symbol)

Square button for the menu function

Arrow up button for cycling up selection action

Arrow down button for cycling down selection action

Cross button for exiting or cancelling action

This way, we can train our fingers to familiarize with the different shapes, and create the association in our head. It’s still requires familiarization but now it relies on giving user clues, instead of forcing them to rely on their memory alone.

The other solution would be, to provide a visual clue on the front panel, on what the buttons hidden are. While it would still pose a challenge, it’s minimizing error and the hassles.

Another funny thing in this troubleshooting episode is, both UX and “Somehow It Works (SIW)” type of solutions both relies heavily on utilizing what user have already known. While UX relies on giving signals or clues to the user to apply knowledge they already know from somewhere else, SIW unconsciously drive a user to take the most familiar path in his mind, applying his knowledge and experience from a different field or cases, into the new problem at hand. When the solution works, the user seldom understand why it works, they just know it does. It happens because users managed to came to the solution intuitively rather than educatively.

Good UX then, should always considers and taking advantage of what user have already know, instead of forcing them to familiarize with something radically different. (byms)

For you creative people who are interested in TED conferences, and highly intoxicated with Eat, Pray, Love; or just plainly wanting to visit Bali and need a good reason to your boss/spouse/yourself, here’s an agenda for you: TedxUbud is going to be held this year in 26 May 2012 in Ubud, Bali.

As with other similar events, TEDxUbud is an independently organized TED conferences, to spread the legacy of TED conferences which currently has been running for over 25 years, to a wider audience world-wide. Indonesia itself currently has TEDx conferences running in four cities: Jakarta (the capital, “The Big Durian”), Bandung (Jawa Barat), Makassar (Sulawesi), and Ubud (Bali). After a good start back in 2008, now there are multiple TEDx events running in Jakarta and Bandung.

While the original TED focuses on Technologi, Entertainment, and Design, TED’s “Ideas worth spreading” motto gain a new perspective when turned into TEDx. Now topics are not limited to the three main topics of TED, but also includes idea from wider topics. And when held in Ubud, Bali, which is well known as the top tranquillity tourism destination in Indonesia, this year, TEDxUbud will carry the theme “Threads of Change” which according to its official website:

“Focusing on near-term impact topics like waste, design, sustainability, local spaces, local empowerment, and business. It will focus on ideas that are likely to change the world in the near-term (3-5 years) instead of those whose impact is in the distant future.”

And since this TED, you’ll have the chance to get involved in the event as well instead of merely sitting and watching:

“Half of the programming comes from our speakers and from specially chosen video TEDTalks. But the other half of the programming is you. Some of the best parts of any TED or TEDx event are the conversations you’ll have in between, and we challenge you to come prepared to engage. We deliberately schedule generous breaks between presentations for conversation over catered snacks. Stretch your legs, share a coffee, and introduce yourself to other attendees. Talk about the speakers, and spread some ideas of your own.”

For those interested, please mark your calendar for 8 April 2012 where TEDxUbud will officially open their registration form online.

Walaupun katanya, garansi bisa jadi (might) hangus.

Prosedur Rooting HTC Salsa

Sebelum mulai proses rooting HTC Salsa, ada baiknya anda persiapkan dulu keperluan-keperluan berikut ini:

HTC Salsa (ya iya lah!)

Komputer: Desktop PC maupun Notebook berbasis Windows

Koneksi internet

Kabel data

Address book

Bookmarks

Custom dictionary

File-file media (musik, video, foto)

Dokumen-dokumen pribadi

Downloads yang belum sempat ditransfer ke komputer

Aplikasi favorit anda (menjadi APK), terutama:

File explorer

Google Play (Market versi 2012)

Lepas cover baterai HTC Salsa

Lepas baterai

Masukkan kembali baterai

Ikuti prosedurnya hingga tuntas

Catatan:

Installing CWM 5 (ClockWorkMod Recovery versi 5x)

Handphone: Pada mode Bootloader pilih “Fastboot”, biarkan

Hubungkan kabel, mode akan berubah otomatis menjadi “Fastboot USB”

Komputer: Ketik “fasboot flash recovery recovery.img”

Install Busybox

Download source nya (dari sini)

Pilih version v1.17.1

Pilih lokasi “/system/xbin”

Install Data2SD

Download file “htc-data2sd-ext3.zip” (dari sini)

Pindahkan file ke SD Card

Dari CWM Recovery pilih “Install from SD”

Mount SD as external storage

Penting!

Sekian, semoga bermanfaat. (byms)

Update 09/07/2012

Setelah root jadi sering kena error “mismatched UID”, terakhir tiga hari lalu penyebabnya entah kenapa.

(byms)
